  • Do you know what one of the most important duties of the Secretary of State’s Office is? The Secretary of State is responsible for insuring that Elections are held cleanly and fairly.
  • Have you ever been to Target or Dairy Queen?  Did you know these corporations register with our office?
  • Both large and small corporations register to do business in the Secretary of State’s Office
  • If you want to be a notary, you must register with the Secretary of State’s Office
  • Some important documents need notarized to prove that the person signing is indeed who they say they are.  Notaries help to prevent document fraud.
  • If you want to be a person who can perform marriages, you must register in the Secretary of State’s Office.
  • If you want to be Private Investigator or a Sports Agent, you must register in the Secretary of State’s Office.
  • Charitable Organizations also register with our office.  When tragedies or natural disasters occur, many different groups raise money to help.  How do you check if these charities are legally working in our state?  You can check our website at www.wvsos.com.  There is a database available where you can see if a group is a registered charity, and even see how the charity spends the money they raise from citizens in West Virginia.  This is very important if you want to make the best decision on where to donate your money.
  • If you want to adopt a baby from a foreign country, you must bring your papers to our office to have them certified or apostilled.
  • All state rules are filed in our office as well.  We insure that the rules are filed correctly as they go through the legislative process.  Our Administrative Law Division is also trying to get the rules filed online to cut out the wasteful use of so much paper.
  • As you can see, we have a lot of duties in our office.  Can you believe we are the smallest Constitutional Office?
  • Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant is the 29th Secretary of State, only the 2nd woman to be elected to a Constitutional Office in West Virginia’s History.  She was also the first female West Virginia University Mountaineer mascot!
