Register to Vote

West Virginia residents may register to vote:


In person at the County Clerk’s office

While attending a voter registration drive

By submitting a mail-in registration application, or

At any designated state agency such as the DMV or DHHR.

Voter Registration Information

To be eligible to register to vote in West Virginia you must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a citizen of the United States;

  • Be a legal West Virginia and county resident in which they are to vote for at least thirty (30) days before the election to be considered eligible to vote. This thirty-day requirement also applies to elections in municipalities, barring other language in municipal charters ; and

  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age;

    • NOTE: Persons who are seventeen years of age, but who will be eighteen by the general election may vote in the primary election if they are registered to vote by the registration deadline. Seventeen-year-olds registered this way will only be eligible to vote in the primary election, not a municipal or special election, until they turn eighteen.
